February is Black History Month and while we're celebrating the contributions of many African-American men and women I would like to take time out to recognize the contributions of our local East Texans. That's why I decided to do a highlight special called “East Texas Legends” to honor the many famous East Texans you may know in person or through our history.

For example, did you know that 'Carl Gardner Day' lands on June 10 in Tyler? I had the fortunate opportunity to meet his son and celebrate on the square earlier last year.

As you listen to Hot 107-3 Jamz, you'll hear segments about the many contributions of notable African Americans who came from East Texas. The goal is to uplift and inspire after seeing what our people have done to excel in sports, entertainment, and politics.

We still have notable East Texans to cover like George Foreman, Forest Whitaker, and Willie Neal Johnson - so stick around for the next East Texas Legend and I was very fortunate to witness the city of Tyler declare June 10, 2017 as "Carl Gardner" day.  Ladies and gentlemen I present to you Mr. Carl Gardner.
