I see Black girl magic sprinkled all across the United States, as we are taking the lead in helping our communities! As a woman of color, it does my heart good to see women who look like me running for office and actually winning! As this year has been unofficially claimed as the 'Year of the Black Woman Mayor,' my curiosity was peaked to see just how many Black women hold the mayoral office across the states and ultimately, the very thing every woman always wants to know.... what do they look like.

Below is our 'Almost Complete List of Black Women Mayors'.

15.Mayor Toni Harp of New Haven, CT

#BlackHistoryMonth Day 6. Toni Harp... Toni Nathaniel Harp currently serves as the 50th Mayor of New Haven, Connecticut - making her the first female Mayor of the city. Prior to becoming mayor, Mrs. Harp served as a New Haven Alderman & was a State Senator in Connecticut from 1993 to 2013. Harp, a resident of New Haven, represented the western half of the city as well as part of West Haven while in the Connecticut Senate. She was born in San Francisco and graduated from Roosevelt University and received a Master of Environmental Design from Yale University. Mrs. Harp helped organize AFSCME Local 3144, a management union, and she became the Human Resources Department's first union steward. As Senator, Harp co-chaired the state's Achievement Gap Task Force, created to address the undeniable disparity in educational access and performance, which exists In 2007 Harp introduced a bill to have the state pay for free diapers for low income mothers. Throughout her distinguished tenure, Toni's signature issues have never waivered: Full access to affordable healthcare, regardless of ethnic, cultural, or economic differences. A responsive and effective public safety network working hand-in-hand with an equitable criminal justice system. Maximizing opportunity for each individual student through public education, with particular emphasis on early childhood learning and development of reading skills. Job creation and economic development so city residents can enjoy the rewards and responsibilities of productive engagement, and so a vibrant city can provide necessary services without putting an excessive burden on taxpayers. #Mayor #ToniHarp #NewHaven #NewHavenHistory #ConnecticutHistory #History #Connecticut A post shared by 💞Ivonnah💞 (@ivonnah) on
